Infinite Energy History
In 1994, two young utility energy buyers named Darin Cook and Rich Blaser felt their knowledge of the wholesale natural gas markets in Florida coupled with the deregulation of the natural gas industry would allow their fledgling company, Infinite Energy, Inc., an edge over the competition. And they were right: By focusing on utilities and large industrial customers, Infinite quickly gained a competitive advantage on natural gas sales and became profitable within its third month of operation.
Infinite started doing what they do best—innovating—and was soon supplying the complete utility needs of utility companies such as Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA), Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) and Seminole Electric Company, along with a host of smaller municipalities throughout Florida. At the time, JEA and Seminole each consumed a staggering 18.25 million decatherms of natural gas annually. (Note: The average household uses just 100 decatherms a year.)
In 1997, Infinite began to experiment in retail markets by supplying natural gas to approximately 100 commercial accounts in Florida. At the same time, the company began participating in developing rules to make deregulation happen in Georgia. The following year, Atlanta Gas Light completely deregulated their natural gas system, allowing all consumers to purchase natural gas from the supplier of their choice. Because of the company’s early involvement, Infinite was one of only a handful of marketers to have customers on the first day of deregulation in Georgia.
In 1998, Infinite’s sister company, Infinite Properties, LLC, purchased the first of four Gainesville, Florida, office buildings, currently encompassing a total of 55,000 square feet of space.
Infinite took on a new challenge in 1999 with the acquisition of a 3,000-unit apartment complex account in Georgia. To care for the new customer’s needs, Infinite created its first credit/collections and customer service departments along with a billing system that offered the apartment complex management company group billing, a never-before-seen service for the area. Infinite soon gained more than 30,000 customers in the apartment community because of this advantage.
In 2004, Infinite brought its expertise to the retail natural gas markets in New York and New Jersey, quickly gaining more than 10,000 customers in those markets. New offices in Marietta, Georgia, and Fort Lee, New Jersey, opened that same year.
To bring new products to the market requires a tremendous amount of programming work. Infinite has more than 40 programmers on staff and an Information Technology department of nearly 90 people. This focus on technology allows the company to develop products to serve the mass retail market that other marketers simply cannot do.
Infinite celebrated 15 years of success in 2009, with the crowning moment being named one of Florida’s 25 “Best Large Companies” to work for by Florida Trend magazine. The company currently employs 350 people and garnered more than $700 million in business in FY 2008. With rapidly expanding markets all over the U.S. and new product opportunities on the horizon, the future looks incredibly bright for Infinite Energy.
